DESCRIPTION: EPW - Pryngeps, Swiss, 40mm, 18K gold OF original case with "J.E.M." initials to rear (for Joseph E. Murray, M.D. with his first initial being located centrally on the case rear), base metal spacing ring around mvt, silvered dial with date aperture at 3, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 17J, satin gilt finish, no visible mvt s#. Comes with a Pyrngeps marked padded box and with a 7.5 inch gold-plated chain. Gross weight of assembled watch 22.8 dwt (35.6 g). This piece is from the estate of Joseph E. Murray, M.D. who was an American plastic surgeon who performed the first successful human kidney transplant on December 23, 1954. In the decades to follow this historic accomplishment, Murray was to continue advancing the field of transplantation and in 1990 was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good date function, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine scratches adjacent stem detent screw; nearly mint dial with few pinpoint surface spots; excellent hands with some light haze spotting; case shows hardly any wear, few fine scratches, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; clean plastic crystal; box shows light wear, some dark material and marks to its exterior. Chain shows very little wear.
